Witch Lynching in Chhattisgarh

A 20-year-old married woman was stripped, paraded and lynched (to death) by a superstitious mob who suspected her of practising witchcraft ... in Vijay Nagar ... on the eastern outskirts of the city.

Largely illiterate Chhatisgarhi tribals live in the densely-populated slum. A resident Yogesh Thakur's two- and-half-year-old daughter Manisha died ... A tantrik ... alleged that Tikambai was a witch and had cast a fatal spell on little Manisha ... A panchayat was summoned and it was decided to "punish" Tikambai for practising "sorcery" ... Tikambai's husband Shyamlala (who) escaped ... with their two young children ... did not dare complain to the police ... (Source: The Times of India, 27 June, 2000)
