United Front: Election Manifesto, 1998 (Extracts)


 

Secularism: ... The UF reiterates that secularism means the separation of religion from the State Secularism has been defined as a basic feature of the Indian Constitution by the Supreme Court. The efforts by communal forces to undermine the multi-ethnic, multi-religious and multi- linguistic character of our society will be strongly rebuffed.

The UF will strictly implement the Protection of Places of Worship Act. It will actively combat all efforts by the communal forces to create fresh disputes in Kashi  and Mathura. The Babari Masjid-Ram Janmabhoomi dispute at Ayodhya will be resolved with reference to the Supreme Court or on the basis of a consensus.

The right to freedom of religion contained in the  Constitution will be fully respected and protected. The personal codes of different religious communities will not be altered unless and until a consensus emerges for bringing about such a change ..

Jammu and Kashmir: The UF is committed to granting maximum autonomy to state of J&K maintaining Article 370 of the Constitution and regional antonomy to Jammu and Ladakh regions within this framework.

Social Justice: The UF reiterates its commitment to the  empowerment of the underprivileged, deprived sections and communities ..

A large number of Scheduled Castes and other backward classes are dependent on their traditional occupations. On the one hand, the door of access to other occupations has been barred to them while, on the other hand, there is a sharp dwindling of opportunities and incomes in their traditional occupations ... There is still a long way to go before these sections achieve true equality of opportunity. The UF will make all efforts to attain this objective.

Protection of Minority Rights: Special efforts will be  made to improve the living conditions of the minorities with respect to education, employment and other opportunities. .. The UF is committed to establish Urdu  Primary Schools to eradicate illiteracy among the minorities within a time-bound programme.

The UF is also committed to provide guarantee in aid to non-governmental organisations who will come forward to start minority educational institutions.

The UF government shall undertake a comprehensive  economic package for improving their standard and quality of life.
