Statement on Conviction of Christian for Blasphemy in Pakistan

The abuse of blasphemy laws, and the resultant distortion of justice, are issues to which those with any sense of fellow feeling cannot remain indifferent.

We uphold the majesty of the law and subscribe to the sanctity of the judicial process ... The abuse of the blasphemy law as a weapon for communal vendetta ... is a greater blasphemy ...

Even if the controversial blasphemy law were to be invoked it can apply only to those who confess and insist on their blasphemous statements, and not on those who are only alleged to have made them.

We are convinced that the blasphemy law has no scriptural sanction and is un-Islamic in spirit and substance. To kill anyone in the name of the holy Prophet, who is referred to in the Quran as "the Prophet of mercy for all creatures" (Quran 21:107) is the ultimate blasphemy.
