Sardar Patel, who was chairman of the Minorities Committee of the Constituent Assembly, had proposed reservations for the Muslim community but leaders of that community could not appreciate the advantages flowing from that and therefore they rejected it. Hence the provisions in the original draft of the Constitution which were numbered 292 and 294 had to be deleted. However, under the Mandal Commission's recommendations, 67% of the Muslims have been included amongst the backwards and have been covered by the recommendations. It may be appreciate now that the religious minorities particularly those sections amongst them which are still denied reservations are provided the same.
