Shahabuddin's Views on Reservation Letter to The Dalit Voice, 16 October, 1997


 

... A vast majority of Muslims are not converts from Hinduism but have descended from converts to Islam from Hinduism. That is why and how the caste system came into Muslim society, particularly because even after change of faith, the converts continued their old profession. But there was one change: the Achhuts and their descendants were no longer "Untouchable". This is the reason why the SCs are defined in the Constitutional Order 1950 in relation to Hinduism. This is being challenged now because it is said that Christians and Muslims, who are descendants of Untouchables, continue to suffer disabilities and are educationally and socially backward groups are entitled to be treated as OBCs which is not synonymous with the Shudras though it largely covers Shudra castes. I do not see any additional advantage for Muslim social groups being treated as SC and not as OBCs. In fact, I see many disadvantages: the Muslim community, which is educationally, economically and socially backward, as a whole, is proposed to be divided not only in two but in three sections - thus losing its strength. I request Dr. Ali to prove quantitatively how the Muslim Dalits will fare better on being clubbed with SCs, than with OBCs or with Muslim OBCs or Muslims, as a whole ...
