The senseless police action in the Campus of the Jamia on 9 April, 2000 has shocked the entire community and the academic fraternity. This is not only a matter of immediate concern but raises the question of long-term modus vivendi between the Jamia and the Delhi Police.

I am glad that the Jamia has stood by its students and decided to provide legal aid to those who have been falsely charged and put behind the bar and medical care to those who have been hospitalised. I would request you to depute the senior officers of the Jamia regularly to visit those in jail and in the hospital. You may also visit them in due course.

I would suggest that the Jamia should claim full compensation for the physical damage wrought by the police to the Hostel and the Masjid and also an apology for the unauthorised entry in the Campus and assault on the students.

The Jamia will remain where it is. Hence it is essential that the Jamia and the Delhi Police should work out a mutually acceptable arrangement for interaction when the circumstances so demand. In view of the autonomy of the Jamia, this agreement should be based on the principle that the police shall not enter the campus without prior permission of the Jamia authorities.
