Shahabuddin's Letter to The Hindustan Times, 28 January, 1998 Apropos Shri Praful Goradia's letter Electoral Fodder

(20 Jan.,98). Much as I share the vision of Sub-continent as a zone of peace, good neighbour and cooperation, which would benefit all its people. I de not see why he identifies it with Muslim Indians, a minority group in India, voting for the BJP which is a majoritarian party.

On one hand, it is not true that the Muslim Indians vote for any one party throughout the country or even within one state, it is also true that the BJP has a Hindu vote bank and almost all parties rely on the support of one or more Hindu sub-communities. The Yadavas, the Kurmis, the Koeris, the Chamars, the Disadhs, not to speak of the high castes, all, serve in greater measure, as electoral fodder for parties of their choice. Of course, at the Constituency level, every minority group tends to vote en masse for a party/candidate which it finds more sensitive to its concerns. And that is how it has to be.
