Shahabuddin's Letter to Sonia Gandhi 10 June, 1998

The Babari Masjid Movement Coordination Committee is grateful to you for writing to the Prime Minister on the question of VHP's plan for the construction of the proposed Ram Janambhoomi Mandir. May I say that in his reply, the Prime Minister has tried to misled you, exactly as he and his Home Minister tried to misled you, exactly as he and his Home Minister tried to mislead both Houses of Parliament.

No one has alleged that any construction is going on at the disputed site. The case is that pillars and other architectural elements, in accordance with the design for the ground floor, which are being cut, carved and polished in Ayodhya (at Kar Sevakpuram which is at some distance from the disputed site) and in various places in Rajasthan and are being transported to and stored in Ayodhya.

Since the Special Bench of the Allahabad HC has not yet completed the examination of witnesses and the final judicial verdict (presumably by the Supreme Court) on the title to the disputed site is not even on the horizon, the intention behind transportation and to storage in Ayodhya raises reasonable suspicions about the intention and plan of the VHP to mount a sudden operation with the collusion of the State Government (as in December, 1992) to put the pre-fabricated pillars etc. on the concrete platform which is to serve as the base of at least half the temple and which already exists.

I would, therefore, request you to ask the Prime Minister to ban the transportation of pillars etc. from Rajasthan to Ayodhya and impound the stocks in Ayodhya. Secondly, you may also like to ask the Prime Minister to prosecute the VHP for repeated public declarations that no power on earth, not even the SC, can stop the construction and that it shall begin within 2 years? Is the VHP trying to terrorise and humiliate the SC? The concrete base, constructed in July 1992 against the status quo Order of the SC on the disputed land, is illegal and should have been demolished in ordinary course of law. You may like to examine whether the SC may be moved to order the demolition of the platform, not only to remove an illegal structure but also to allay all fears and apprehensions of any construction by the VHP. In case you need some clarification, I am at your service.
