Shahabuddin's Letter to Prime Minister, 3 April, 1998

According to Shri Yubaraj Ghimire's report in the Indian Express, New Delhi, 31 March, 1998, the VHP has proposed that the Babari Masjid site, on which a make- shift temple now standing (and the disputed land around it) be 'restored' to the Ram Janambhoomi Trust for the construction of the proposed Ram Janambhoomi Mandir.

You may kindly recall that the disputed land, including the Babari Masjid site was acquired by the Union Government in June, 1993. The Supreme Court has ordered a freeze on the dispersal of the acquired land till the Special Bench of the Allahabad High Court decides the title suit pending before it. The hearings are going on.

I do not see how the State Government enters the picture. How can a State Government or for that matter the Union Government defy the Supreme Court's order or nullify it by an Ordinance?

Such reports create apprehension even in the mind of those persons who are sympathetic to the BJP because they tend to confirm the existence of the hidden agenda.

I request that the VHP and the Chief Minister of UP should be advised that such a move would go against the National Agenda and the politics of consensus that you wish to follow.

I also request you that the Union should render all possible assistance to the Special Bench to expedite the hearing of the title suit.

Stone Pillars for 'Ram Mandir'

Despite many legal and political obstacles in the way of re-construction of Shri Ram Temple at Ayodhya, three workshops in Ayodhya and Rajasthan are regularly preparing material which will be used in the re- construction. According to an activist of the Shri Ram- Janmabhoomi Trust, material for 32 ft height of the temple (total height 132 ft) is almost ready ...

The stone work, as per the proposed model of the temple was startéd in 1991 at the Nyas Karyashala in the Ramghat area of Ayodhya ...

.. The joint secretary of VHP, Shri Champat Rai, said that ... if the stone are ready we can start the re- construction work beginning from the sanctum sanctorum as soon as circumstances favour us. He pointed out that about 2.5 lakh sq. ft. of stone ... are to be used ...Sculpturing of stones for the floor and the stairs is almost complete and the work on 49 whole and 24 part pillars out of a total of 144 whole and 68 part pillars, is on ... Right now only stones for the sanctum sanctorum are being cut.                              (Source: The Organiser, April 5, 1998)

Farhat Ehsas, Editor, Qaumi Awaz On Babari Masjid Problem

"Whether the ritualistic wailings and mournful demonstrations on every anniversary of the demolition is the only way to reconstruct the broken thing and whether the cultural and spiritual perception of the Muslims cannot think of any other solution to the problem?".

"The Muslim leaders and all other political parties whipped up so much hatred against P.V. Narasimha Rao by damning him as the first culprit responsible for the demolition ... Consequently, the Congress was driven out of political power. However, its place was taken by a loose combination of those parties who had cleverly exploited the situation to reach the corridors of power ... Powerful debates ... held in Parliament on the issue of communalism versus secularism ... continues in the minds of the well- wishers of the country. In fact, the questions raised therein are still a cause of a new worry. For while the Janata Dal and the Samajwadi Party (of Mulayam Singh) are clearly propped on the twin issue of "Mandal and Mosque", the Mosque is of more vital importance for them than even Mandal. For, without the 'Mosque', 'Mandal' could not have helped them much. While the Muslims were demanding of the Congress to rebuild the mosque at the old place, these parties came forward to assure them that `you will get the mosque, if you put us in power'. This is what the Muslims understood by their campaign. And this is the false promise which is the basis of their power".

"But now when the leaders of these two parties are in power, they are trying to put off the Muslims. Instead of fulfilling the promise they are trying to lure them by raising diversionary issues like reservations for Muslims. However, one thing that they do not confess in public but know inwardly is that they dare not rebuild the broken prayer-house. They dare not admit that this is beyond their power because it is the question of defying the collective will of the majority, and this is the domain in which their writ does not run. For, even their captive vote-bank, that is those sections of people who are mesmerised by the  Mandal mirage, will not allow the reconstruction of the mosque. As at is, it is one thing to capture power by exploiting the emotional mosque issue and quite another to solve the problem". (Source: The Organiser, 22 December, 1996)
