The question of the VHP's preparation for the construction of the proposed Ram Mandir in Ayodhya on the disputed site, including the site of the Babari Masjid was raised in the Rajya Sabha on 3 June, 1998 by Shri C. Balanandan and Shri K.M. Khan.
You are reported to have said that no construction activity was going on at the disputed site and that the carving of stones (at places away from the disputed site and at some villages in Rajasthan) did not constitute violation of any law. However, your statement does not touch the question of transportation of carved pillars and other architectural elements to Ayodhya., There is legal view that since the pillars etc. are admittedly meant for the proposed Mandir whose construction stands prohibited by the Supreme Court (SC), the purpose of taking them to Ayodhya is malafide.
I would, therefore, reiterate my request that the government should instruct the VHP: a) not to take the pillars etc. to Ayodhya; b) not to make public declaration of their intention to begin the construction at an early date without waiting for the Order of the SC.
