I appreciate that you visited the Jamia Millia Islamia and saw with your own eyes the havoc and destruction wrought by the police on 9 April, 2000 in its barbaric assault on the students in the Hostel and the attached Masjid which have shocked the University and the Muslim community.
I request you to advise the Lt. Governor to suspend the police officers concerned and prosecute them for criminal acts unworthy of public servants.
I also request you to advise the authorities concerned to withdraw the false cases against the students and to release them unconditionally.
The incident also brings to the fore the question of long-term modus vivendi between the Jamia and the Delhi Police. The Jamia is an autonomous University. Its autonomy should be respected. The Jamia and the Delhi Police should work out a mutually acceptable arrangement for police intervention - which may include the entry of the police in the Campus - with prior knowledge and permission of the University authority, if and when the circumstances so demand. Unless such an arrangement is made, ugly confrontation are bound to recur.
