Shahabuddin's Letter on Delhi CM's Appeal for Gau Mata, 11 December, 1997

I have seen the appeal of Shri Sahib Singh, Chief Minister of Delhi for saving the cow as advertisement in several papers. He has asked the people not to "reap the sin" of inadvertent death of "Gau Mata", on swallowing indigestible plastic bags.

It is strange that his appeal has such a religious tone and content. Why shoundn't he try to save all loiter animals from eating the garbage (including plastic bags) and thus inviting their death. Secondly, why should he invoke the concept of "Mata" and "sin" in such a case?Is he appealing only to the Hindus and leaving Muslims, Christians and others free to throw the plastic bags around?

The Government of the Capital Territory of Delhi should not act as if Delhi has Hindu residents only or that it is the Government of the Hindus by the Hindus, and for the Hindus - and for Gau Mata - only.
