Sakshi Maharaj Denies Role in Demolition

Sachidanand Sakshi Maharaj, who joined the Samajwadi Party (on 12 October, 1999) denied that he had participated in the demolition of the Babari Masjid.

"I am against the demolition of any religious place and had vehemently opposed the Masjid being demolished" ... The Masjid had been demolished under a conspiracy hatched by the Sangh Parivar members, including Ashok Singhal, Acharya Giriraj, Murli Manohar Joshi and the Uddipi Shankaracharya. The conspiracy had the blessings of then prime minister Narasimha Rao ..

He said the same people had wanted to demolish the idgah at Mathura but "as the local MP, it was me who thwarted their plot". The angry Sangh Parivar members had then presented him with bangles ...

Six years earlier on 11 October 1993, a magistrate had taken cognisance of a CBI chargesheet that accused him of participating in the Masjid's demolition.

The CBI SP, M. Narayanan said in the chargesheet that Sakshi Maharaj was "present in the proximity of the disputed structure at Ayodhya on December 6, 1992 amongst others and they deliberately with the object to achieve the ends of the conspiracy which emphatically envisaged demolition ... involved themselves by active participation and for incitement and active contribution to achieve the ends of the conspiracy which in the ultimate analysis was completely erased by the evening of December 6, 1992".
