RSS Chief Rajendra Singh On RSS-BJP Relations

.. "We will not hold the government on a leash, nor turn the heat on it. There is nothing common between the BJP and us, we only share an ideology. The only thing we would expect is that the government will not hinder our activities like Indira Gandhi or the Communist government in Kerala did."

There would be no change in the RSS stand on contentious issues like Ayodhya, Mathura and Kashi but ... Muslims ... have nothing to fear, but they should not give the impression that they have aligned with the invaders.

"We would like to see a strong and prosperous country with the stress on our culture, language, self- respect, self-sufficiency and self-pride" ...

... "Unless the BJP came to power, there was no way it could solve certain problems. They have a right to make compromises because they did not get the right number. I think, the BJP's good governance will soon make the others fall in line".

... "My own view-point has not changed ... It is not the question of building certain temples, but that of national prestige. The invaders who came from abroad to rule us are gone. These monuments that you see are a slur on our independence. Only when the mosques there are removed Hindus will gain self-respect. How this should be done - through negotiation, legislation or education - that has to be decided" .                                                                        (Interview withGautham Machaiah in The Times of India, 28 March, 1998)

On BJP's Alliances: The BJP might have alliances but each party has a different manifesto and they are fighting on their own agenda. It's only a question of seat adjustments to make sure that their votes don't get divided and the third party doesn't win. And the BJP has not done anything which we don't approve of.

On Ayodhya, Kashi and Mathura: Being a political party, the BJP thinks and talks about the immediate issues. They need not think about the questions of the future. At present we cannot do anything about Ram temple because the land surrounding it has been taken over by the Govt.

On BJP's Policies: Kalyan Singh induct people with criminal links in his Cabinet ... to show that the BJP was not an untouchable. To show that you can't make a fool of us every time and topple our governments. For abnormal times we have to adopt abnormal policies.

On Godse: Godse was motivated by (the philosophy of)  akhand Bharat. Uske mantavya achhe thhe par usne achhe uddeshya ke liye galat method istemal kiya (His intention was good but he used the wrong methods) ... He was shocked to see crores of people migrate (from Pakistan) and wanted to kill all the leaders.                             (Source: The Outlook, 19 January, 1998)
