... The left Literary magazine editorial ... is a clear  demonstration of the success of the Hindutva assault on the consciousness of weak-kneed leftists. The editorial makes two interrelated points. One, "by creating the bogey of communalism, Sahmat is joining hands with people of all shades and hues". And two, to argue that those who are opposing vandalism against Hussain are "giving the game away to the BJP"

... How does an ideology acquire hegemonic status? It does so by setting the terms of discourse and above all by penetrating the consciousness of its opponents ... It seems to have imbibed the elements of the Hindutva ideology, wittingly or wittingly, such is the dominance of these ideas ...
