Punjab Wakf Board: Performance During 1997-98


 

During 1997-98, the Punjab Wakf Board has achieved a record revenue collection of Rs. 10.24 crore, This is higher by Rs. 3.07 crore over the previous year ...During the year the Board has spent Rs. 2.79 crore on various social welfare and educational development schemes for the benefit of members of minority community and backward classes in its jurisdiction namely Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Chandigarh. This amount is higher by Rs. 20 lacs from the previous financial year ... Ever since the Board was superseded in 1981 by the Central Government its revenue collection has been showing an upward trend and the administration of the Board by serving civil servants resulted in its turn-around from mounting deficit and near bankruptcy to respectable income.

The Board plans to set up Wakf College of Information and Technology in Chandigarh with an estimated cost of Rs.15 lacs for providing quality education in field of information technology .,. a maternity hospital at Malerkotla with an estimated cost of Rs.1.95 crore and construction of office-cum-shopping complexes at Rajpura, Khanna, Phillaur, Jalandhar, Kapurthala, Sangrur, Malerkotla, Ferozepur,and Batala in Punjab, Bilaspur, Yamunanagar, Karnal and Ambala in Haryana and Ogli, Amb and Solan in Himachal Pradesh at an estimated cost of Rs.2.88 crore and the provision of a mobile dispensary at Malerkotla ...

During 1997-98 Rs. 1.2 crore have been spent on schools, vocational centres, computer centres and monthly aid ... to a number of educational and religious institutions being run by the community ...

Merit-cum-means ... and special scholarships was granted to 548 students and old-age/orphans pension scheme was availed by 92 persons. Around 1529 widows are also getting pension from the Board and this year an amount of Rs. 19.91 lacs was spent on this account ... 46 educational and vocational centres, run by the public, are receiving monthly aid from the Board. 426 Dini Maktabs/ Masjids and Madrasas are also receiving monthly aid of Rs. 32.59 lacs from the Board.
