P.K. Roy On Congress Electoral Debacie

The ignominious electoral debacle suffered 'by the Congress(I) in the recently held by-elections in eight Assembly and one Lok Sabha constituencies in Uttar Pradesh, wherein each of the. party's nine. Candidates forfeited their deposits, underlines the fact that the party's downward slide in the State has not stopped.

The verdict reflects on the party's central leadership which has failed to revamp the organisation, which is run on an ad hoc basis by political lightweights ...

In the Kannauj Lok Sabha seat, the party candidate, Satyadev Tripathi, secured 7,598 votes out of the 7,10,082 polled which amounts to a little over one per cent. Kannauj has a sizable chunk of Brahmin voters and Tripathi is himself a Brahmin and a former Minister ...

The Cong(I) fared equally badly in the Assembly bypolls ... Save for the Sahabad onstituency in Rampur district where the party candidate secured 11.242 votes. In the rest of seven seats, the Cong(I) candidates did not cross the four- digit mark ... (Source: The Hindu, 28 Febr .; 2000)
