On my return from a visit abroad towards the end of September, 1998, I heard echoes of your informal suggestion, perhaps in an interview, to rename the Lal Quila (Red Fort), in Delhi. I am told that the context in which you made this suggestion was for a memorial to Netaji Subash Chandra Bose. Netaji gave us the call 'Delhi Chalo". So in a sense, Delhi may be renamed as Subash Nagar! In another sense his pledge has been fulfilled when successive Prime Ministers of India have unfurled the national flag from its ramparts on Independence Days.
Lal Quila is not only a historic monument but the headquarter of our First War of Independence, when people of all communities joined, under the titular Emperor Bahadur Shah Zafar to launch it. In deference, not only to Emperor Shahjahan but to the memory of that common struggle, may I request you to drop the idea?
