May I draw your attention to the VHP's plan to set up "Chauhan Yuva Parishad" in Rajasthan (The Indian Express, 29 June, 1998) to prevent Maulvis from entering villages where Muslim Merats live, to occupy Taragarh Fort in Ajmer and to organise a Rath Yatra, to convert the Merats to Hinduism.
The Constitution grants the freedom to propagate one's faith but not to obstruct religious activities of others or to organise private armies to coerce anyone in the name of ancestry or history or culture.
I request you to advise the VHP to restrain itself and keep its activities within the law. I also request you to advise the State Government to protect the Muslim minorities from coercion and pressures and to take cognizance of any unlawful acts by the VHP.
