Navid Zafar on Muslim Minorities: A Question of Survival

Islam is character is the religion of majority ... Four out of five basic principles of Islam can thus prosper only if the government and the governed are both Muslims.

The Prophet of Islam spent his first thirteen years of prophethood in Makkah, where Muslims were in minority. Hence no Friday congregations, no Hajj, although they lived and visited the Holy Kaaba every day. No Zakat and no Jihad. As the Prophet proceeded to  Madina, everything changed and the crux of the change was, because Muslims had increased from minority to majority.

As Islam spread from Madina to the world outside, no conscious effort was made to change the religion of the local population and the areas to come under Muslim influence invariably had minority governments ... There were countries in Europe like Spain and Sicily and in Asia like India, Malaysia and Philippines, where Muslims were in power for centuries and yet their number could hardly touch 10 per cent of the local population.

... Whenever the Muslim population was subjected to live in situations where their rulers were non-Muslims, they were required to live not only as second class citizens, but very often were asked to vacate if they insisted on maintaining their Muslim character ... Why is it not possible for the Muslims to survive as minorities?                                 (Source: The Firmest Bond)
