Muslim Leaders' Statement On Kosova Situation New Delhi, 7 October, 1998

On behalf of the Muslim community of India and the other peace-loving people of the country, we, the representative of Muslim Organisations, condemn the inhuman atrocities perpetrated by the Government of the former Yugoslavia against the Kosovan people in the current phase of ethnic cleansing and massacre by the Serbian leaders, in complete defiance of international public opinion.

We equally condemn the protection and support extended to the Serbian authorities by Russia which has opposed international intervention to save the people of Kosova from massacre, plunder, starvation and cold.

With nearly 300,000 people on the move, at least half of them will perish, if they are not urgently rehabilitated. For this great but avoidable human tragedy, the world shall hold Russia wholly responsible.

We urge the United Nations General Assembly to anticipate or nullify the Russian veto or threat to veto by adopting an appropriate and effective resolution which should authorise urgent military intervention to stop the atrocities, to make adequate arrangements and to protect and rehabilitate them in their homes and find an honest political solution to the crisis, as well as, authorise the trial of the Serbian leaders as war criminals for the crime of genocide.

We call upon the Government of India to take the initiative in this regard along with other like-minded State- members of the Non-aligned Movement.
