Karmarkar (added that) he had initially wanted a ram as his "son-in-law". "I first thought of ... a he-goat. But its owner may be tempted to sell him to a butcher later, and that would have left my daughter widowed. So I settled for a dog as the groom ... This is just a ceremony to ward off the evil spirits that have got into my daughter. You (may) call this superstition ... Anju's mother ... But the district administration has no such plans.
