Following the demolition of the Ram Janma Bhoomi- Babri Masjid structure at Ayodhya on 6 December, 1992, the Central Government had acquired the disputed area and the adjacent land through the Acquisition of Certain Area Act, 1993 and appointed the Commissioner, Faizabad Division as the authorised person to manage the property and maintain the status-quo therein. The Supreme Court vide its judgement dated 24.10.1994 upheld the Constitutional validity of the said Act except for Section 4(3) thereof which was struck down. According to the judgement, the pending suits and other proceedings relating to the disputed area, which had abated by virtue of Section 4(3) of the Act, have been revived for final adjudication by the Allahabad High Court. The cases are now at the stage of recording of evidence and the hearings are continuing.
