Left Parties Joint Statement On Situation in Ayodhya, 14 June, 1998

The Left Parties team comprising Basud  Acharya, Dipankar Mukherjee, Gurudas Dasgupta, Amar Roy Prahdhan, Abani Roy, Ajay Chakraborty. and Joachim Baxla visited Ayodhya on June 13, 19 and issued the following statement - Editor.

... The construction work of the Mandir was being carried on in a workshop, which is at a distance of 1km from the disputed spot.

The model of the Ram Mandir is on display in workshop ... Nearly 50/60 workers alongwith supervisors and managers are at work. The workshop I recently installed a large stone cutting machine expedite the work ... the work at the place is constant supervised and monitored by the Vishwa Hindu Parishad and RSS.

The structure of the Mandir above the ground level being constructed in pieces, by parts, and predetermined strategy is to enable the organisers assemble the parts and set up the Mandir, with breakneck speed, as and when the opportunity arises ..

... Similar construction work is going on with pin stones in three other places at Pindori in Rajasthan. Therefore ... the construction of the 'structure' taking place in four different places, is in a well advance stage and is going on in the states where the BJP in the power.

When we asked the people at work where the Mandi will be built, we had the unambiguous answer that it will be the Ramjanmabhoomi area.

Therefore, the point is that, when the court is seized with the issue of construction of Ram Mandir at the disputed site called the Ramjanmabhoomi and the judicial verdict is yet to be pronounced, why such work in also being undertaken.

While the judicial pronouncement cannot be prejudged, Vishwa Hindu Parishad, RSS and Bajrang Dal must have been guided by the political consideration of keeping the issue alive, whipping up passions among its hardcore support base, thus putting constant pressure on the judiciary ...

To indulge in the build-up of a Mandir in parts and near to the disputed site, gives clearly the signal of an attempt to set up the Mandir at any cost, only at the disputed site and nowhere else. Therefore, the development is a matter of grave concern, too dangerous to be overlooked by the country and by the government.

The assurance of the Prime Minister on the floor of the parliament ... is of little significance in view of the construction being done, so close to the disputed area with the avowed declaration of the VHP and RSS that the Mandir will be built only where the disputed site is.

It is for the government to take appropriate steps to ensure that judicial process is not again subverted on the soil of Ayodhya.
