.. Kalyan Singh's options are severely restricted. His espousal of the Ram Mandir cause makes an open alliance with Mulayam Singh Yadav impossible .. If he drops the Ram Mandir issue, he gives up his USP (unique selling point). On the other hand, any attempt to revive the temple movement can only get off the ground if there is a serious split between the hard-liners and liberals in the Sangh Parivar. This seems unlikely with the BJP leadership united on the question of preserving power at all costs at the Centre and the RSS leadership preferring to make use of a BJP-led government at the Centre to spread its tentacles throughout the country. Even at the ground level, the conditions are not fertile for a Ram Janmabhoomi type agitation. Neither the classes nor the masses would support it.

Thus, beyond further eroding the OBC base of the BJP in UP, Kalyan Singh has a limited political role to play. At the most, he may .bring down the BJP state government in UP ... However, the political outfit he intends to float does not have a bright future. In a way this is a step forward. When a man's political rise is intimately connected to fomenting Hindu-Muslim tension and conflict, the only progressive role he plays is after he is consigned to the garbage bin by his own party.
