The response of BJP to Srikrishna report is a dangerous portent. Here is a report by a sitting judge of High Court. After years of painstaking work, a report has been given. It, amongst others, castigates the role of Shiv Sainiks in January riots. Some of them are ministers in the present Maharashtra Government. Minimum of political morality demands that if a politician is indicted by Enquiry Committee he should resign from the government, apart from what other action, including criminal prosecution, may follow. How can a person against whom high powered enquiry has found indulging in acts of provocative communal aggression be allowed to continue as a Minister? In the absence of such resignation the faith of the minorities in the secular character of the Indian State would be visibly shattered. Such a situation would amount to failure of Constitutional machinery in the state, permitting the Governor not only to dismiss those ministers, but if need be to dissolve the house and order fresh elections. Needless to add officials involved can be straightaway proceeded with.
