Joint Statement On Indo-Pak Arms Race, 2 June, 1998

We the working journalists of India and Pakistan appeal to both our governments not to build up tension in the sub-continent by participating in senseless arms race ... when the entire world is moving towards peace ... particularly when both the nations are celebrating golden jubilee of Independence. We appeal to the political parties and governments ... in both the countries to desist from building nuclear weapons and other destructive arms ...

Let both the nations compete with each other in eradicating poverty and illiteracy and attain self-sufficiency in all major fields and let us not divert our precious resources to destructive purposes.

(Let) the intellectuals, writers, artists in particular and concerned citizens in general bring pressure on both the governments to restructure the sub-continent as a peace zone.
