Jawaharlal Nehru On Communalism

We in India have declared war against communalism we will not tolerate it in any shape. There are enormous differences in climate and even in the ways of life among the people who live in Northern India and those who live in the South. You know that I am a resident of the northern part, and I am, even more so, a child of the northern Himalayan mountains. Yet all aspects of diversity in India are superficial. There has been, and there is, a very fundamental unity which binds us, the children of this nation, together. We were not broken as a people in the course of 2,000 years or more of history, even though there were political divisions. I have no doubt that India will remain India whatever temporary political changes take place. India would not have survived through all these years but for something deep down which has held us together for centuries - something which is not politics or economics, something which is a more potent factor than politics. I do not know how to describe it. But obviously, there has been a sense of unity which has held India together, to which any Indian can tune in ...

Momin, General Secretary, GPCC
