From a Muslim Institution to a Sarkari University

 

 

9 September1920        AMU Act, 1920- Passed by

Viceroy's Legislative Council.

12 October, 1920        MA. Ansari, Ajmal Khan and M.K. Gandhi visit Aligarh and cali for boycott of the AMU in the address to students

23 October, 1920        Mohammad Ali, M.A. Ansari, Ajmal Khan, A.K. Azad and Abdul Majid Khwaja visit Aligarh and address students

29 October 1920         Establishment of a national university for Muslims announced by Ajmal Khan. Shaikhul Hind Maulana Mahmoodul Hasan inaugurates it and declares its objectives to keep education of Muslims in Muslim hands. Mohammad Ali depicts objective to transform the AMU into a truly Muslim University. Mohammad Ali takes charge as the first Sheikh-ul-Jamia.

1924                            Abdul Majid Khwaja takes over from Mohammad Ali on his prosecution in Karachi,

3 January, 1931          Mohammad Ali dies in London. Jamia constructs Mohammad Ali Hall to commemorate him. Students Union names its organ as "JOHAR",

4 June, 1939                JMI registered under Societies Registration Act. Sheikh Mahmoodul Hasan, Mohammad Ali, Shaukat Ali Ajmal Ali and M.A. Ansari named as Founders. Later names of AK. Azad and Zakir Husain added, Object and purpose is revised to substitute Muslims by Indians, Muslims in particular.

19 June 1962               Recognized by the UGC as Deemed University Memorandum of Association amended to bar discrimination in admission on the basis of class, race, caste/ baradari

26 December 1988      President sign the JMI Bill which omits the objects and purpose as modified in 1962. opens admission and recruitment to all religions, introduces reservation for SC. ST, the disabled and women.
