Operations for Muslim communities in Non-Member Countries
In 1418H, the Bank approved 30 organisations amounting to about ID 7.90 million (US$10.66 million) from the IDB Waqf Fund (previously called the Special Assistance Account). Seven (7) operations amounting to ID 2.92 (US$3.95 million) were approved in 7 member countries, and 23 operations amounting to ID 4.98 million (US$6.71 million) were approved for Muslim communities and societies is 15 non-member countries ....
During 1418H, 14 operations amounting to ID 1.63 million (US$2.18 million) were approved for Muslim communities in India as part of a US$30 million grant approved in 1405H for the support of vocational training and educational activities. At the end of 1418H, 163 operations had been approved amounting to ID 23.13 million(US$29.07 million). Only US$ 0.93 million remains from the amount originally approved. A summary of Wakf Fund activities shows that up to the end of 1418H, a total of 432 operations and programmes amounting to ID 381.27 million (US$457.41 million) have benefited from the Fund. Out of this total, ID 257.53 million (US$10.03 million) has been approved for 175 operations in member countries and ID 123.74 million 9US$ 147.38 million). has been approved for 257 operations for Muslim communities and societies in non-Member countries..
Scholarship Programme
Initiated in 1404H (1983-84), the Scholarship Programme is solely for Muslim communities in non-member countries. It aims at helping needy and meritorious Muslim students in the countries concerned to pursue undergraduate studies in medicine, engineering, dentistry, pharmacy, nursing, veterinary sciences, agriculture and computer science at universities in their home countries, or in other IDB member countries ...
The scholarships are awarded as interest-free loans (qard hasan) to academically meritorious but financially needy students recommended by their respective Muslim communities ...
In each country, the Programme is implemented by bona fide Muslim organizations consisting of Muslim scholars, educațors and community leaders ...
In 1418H (1997-98), the Bank spent US$3.5 million on the Programme. At present, there are 2,165 students studying under the Programme. A detailed list of countries and the number of beneficiaries from each country is provided in Table below.
From the inception of the Scholarship Programme up to the end of 1418H, the Bank has granted scholarships to Muslim communities in 51 countries, including 7 member countries. The total amount spent since the inception of the Programme is US$25.7 million, benefiting 4,323 students. Of this number, 1,725 students have completed their studies and 411 students have been unable to continue with their courses, leaving a balance of 2,165 students still studying under the Programme.
