The Indian History Congress is greatly concerned at the growing threat to the secular nature and integrity of the country posed by the surge of communalism and communal violence witnessed during the last few months. It is also concerned that interested versions of our history are being put forward to support communal positions. It calls upon all historians to be strictly academic in their approach, and not to let their objectivity be clouded by the insistence on a parochial or chauvinistic perception of our past.

The History Congress also believes that now is the time to confront divisive approaches by a more purposeful endeavour to lay before our people the results of scientific research in our history.

The History Congress feels strongly that official and non-official obstructions to the freedom to present scientific views should be resolutely opposed. It regrets the presence of an attitude whereby regional or community heroes cannot be studied objectively... or whereby effort towards inter-community reconciliation can make one vulnerable to personal attacks...
