Hiding the Truth - Editorial, The Hindustan Times, 11 Aug., 1998

.. Partisan considerations rather than a principled approach routinely ... determine policy issues these days ... Advani might have been expected to be less causal in his response. Instead, apart from ruling out the demand for the Manohar Joshi government's dismissal, his emphasis on the "Law (which) lays down that the government has a right to consider or reject the recommendations" unfortunately steers clear of the gross violations of the law in which his allies in Mumbai indulged during the 1992-93 riots. It is this point which an impartial Centre would ordinarily have noted with considerable concern ... bodes ill for future peace ... Mr. Advani (shows) a greater concern for keeping electoral partners in good humour than for eradicating lawlessness by organised political forces.

... The BJP general secretary, Mr. Venkaiah Naidu, has ser a step further to suggest that such inquiry commissions need not be set up at all, no doubt because embarrassing revelations of the misdeeds of political parties can be extremely inconvenient. If Mr. Naidu's idea of burying the past is implemented, the rioters in future can indulge in their acts of murder and mayhem with great freedom since they will have no fear of their criminality being scrutinised ... at a later date.
