On Financial Assistance to Pilgrims

The number of Haj pilgrims who visited Saudi Arabia under the arrangements made by the Central Haj Committee, to whom concessional air fare was made available through chartered flights, are as follows:

1993         -         25,205

1994         -         25,685

1995         -         31,000

The number of pilgrims who participated in the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra is as follows:

1993-94 : 365 1994-95 : 370 1995-96 : 340

Indian pilgrims proceeding for Haj pilgrimage have the option to draw Saudi Riyals 4600/- or Saudi Riyals 5500/-. Due to change in exchange rate, they will have to incur an additional expenditure of Rs. 6072/- or Rs. 7260/ -, depending on the option exercised, for Haj-96 as compared to Haj-95.

The Government have been providing concessional air-fare to Indian Haj pilgrims. The chartering of aircraft for Haj-1996 has still to be finalized and decision regarding the concessional fare will be taken thereafter. (Source: LSUQ No.2249 dated 11 December, 1995 by 8.8.
