... The practice of reserving seats for admissions for their ward and spouses (of university teachers) has been an old one despite having no statutory support. Now, one college has gone a step ahead and reserved seats for grandchildren.

The University's Dyal Singh College (morning) in its Staff Council meeting on 14 August, 1999, decided to introduce reservation for admissions for the grandchild of any employee, serving or retired, who had worked in the college as a regular employee for a period of 15 years or more. This provision makes the candidate eligible for admission to any course if he or she has obtained 40 per cent marks at the 10+2 level ..:

The University's Dean Students' Welfare (DSW), Prof. A. K. Sinha, said: "This is an illegal decision and it will not stand scrutiny in the University's Academic Council. Even a resolution for introduction of reservation for ward and spouses could not be passed in the AC. The practice does not have any statutory support but is underway as a matter of convention."
