If the secular Constitution cannot prevent deep-rooted and institutionalised discrimination that is being inflicted on the minorities on the basis of religion, then the fact has to be faced squarely and courageously and the Constituticn should be made responsive to the problems faced by the 120 million religious minorities in the country.
Our Constitution is not a dead document. it is a living code meant or the living. Just as the solution to the caste divide is economic progress through reservations, the solution to the religious divide too would be found in affirmative action, according reservations to the religious minority till it gets confident enough to stand on its own feet and confront all forms of discrimination ... Within the minority community, reservation on the basis of caste is vieweď by an overwhelming majority with suspicion as a means of divide the community. In real life, a Julaha or an Ansari is first a Muslim and then an artisan. He may or may not face discrimination on his profession but as a Muslim he will have to confine his life to a ghetto existence ...
Those who offer the argument that it is by their own choice that minorities keep themselves out of the 'mainstream' are not being truthful and honest in accepting ground realities. (The) contention that by giving reservations to Muslim women on the basis of religion, the country could be pushed towards theocracy is rather ridiculous, if not amusing, coming as it does from a die-hard Hindutva protagonist. Muslims are hopeful that eventually do justice to Muslim voters.
