The People's Movement for Secularism organised a march on December 6, 1997, to remember and protest the demolition of the Babari Masjid ... and to reaffirm our commitment to secular ideals. About 300 people from a number of organisations as well as individuals, all sharing a common commitment to democracy and secularism, participating in the march ... The police threatened to arrest the demonstrators (including school children) if they did not disperse immediately, ostensibly ... to prevent a clash with the Bajrang Dal ..
We strongly protest at this equating of the Bajrang Dal and the PMS for the record of PMS demonstrations in the past five years has proved our peaceful credentials, while the Bajrang Dal has amply shown its cynical disregard for both democratic ideals and human lives.
Since the PMS stood its ground and refused to disperse, the police finally agreed to an alternative route, following which the demonstration marched to Delhi Gate and culminated in a cultural programme at the end of which an outline of the Babari Masjid was made with candles. We pledge to continue to contribute to the struggle of the Indian people in defence of secularism. (Source: The Times of India, 9 December, 1997)
