A Convention of Indian Muslims in America was held on November 23-24, 1990 at... Silver Spring, Maryland, USA. The Convention was organized by the Association of Indian Muslims, Washington D.C... Representatives of the Consultative Committee of Indian Muslims, Chicago, the Association of Indian Muslims, Detroit; the Indian Muslim Relief Committee, San Francisco, and the Committee for the Defense of Human Rights in India, Virginia, among others, participated in the panel discussions... on the critical concerns of Muslims in India and Indian Muslims in the US. The Convention was attended by about 400... Muslims and several non-Muslims from about 20 States of the US.

The Convention was addressed by... Dr. Abid Hussain, Ambassador of India, Mr. Asghar Ali Engineer of Bombay... and Mrs. Sultana Ansari of Lucknow...

The topics at the Convention were:

• Muslim Agenda in India
• Measures to improve the economic condition of Muslims in India.
• Measures to Eradicate Sectarian Violence in India.
• Measures by Indian Muslims in America to help Muslims in India.

RESOLUTION

We, the Indian Muslims, living in the United States, find that:

1. Communal violence is destroying the fabric of the secular Indian society...
2. The participation of Muslims in economic, educational and business ownership is disproportionately lower than that of non-Muslims.
3. There is a need for a nationwide coordinated effort in the US to mobilise human and material resources for the betterment of Indian Muslims.

And we hereby resolve that:—

1. All out efforts are needed on the part of Indian Muslims to increase participation in the mainstream of Indian society... Muslims have to initiate self-help projects to achieve social, political and educational parity. They should join progressive and secular forces to foster communal harmony and establish a secular vision in India.
2. We condemn the discriminatory practices with respect to educational and employment opportunities for Indian Muslims...
3. The Government of India should stop... atrocities (against) largely Muslim civilian population... in Kashmir (and take) immediate steps... to open dialogue with Kashmiri Muslims and (restore) the democratic process...
4. All places of worship including the Babari Masjid in Ayodhya must be protected, preserved and respected to maintain the secular character of the Indian society. All...steps should be taken by the Indian Government to resolve this issue and bring (about) peace and harmony between the majority and minority communities in India.
5. A Federation of Associations and Organizations of Indian Muslims in America (be established) to co-ordinate their efforts and mobilize resources to provide funds to increase the participation of Indian Muslims in medical, technical, scientific and business fields.
