Shahabuddin's letter to P.M. On Hegdewar's Stamp, 19 March, 1999

The release of a commemorative stamp to mark the 110th birth anniversary of Dr. K.B. Hegdewar, the founder of the RSS, may be justified as a personal act of adoration to a Guru by his 'shish but it also shows an inclination to exploit the State for partisan and sectarian purposes.

No one doubts Dr. Hegdewar's patriotism but his role in the freedom struggle and his credentials as a nationalist are not universally accepted.

This step is bound to give rise to controversies. It may be likened to the issue of a stamp by Germany to honour the ideologues of Fascism,

The people do not understand why your government which has so much to do in so many fields gives priority to such symbolic acts which emphasize its basic ideological character.
