Mohammed Hussain, a "descendent" from the 10th son of Tipu, is trying to recover the 24-bigha cemetery at Satish Mukherjee Road in Tollygunge which belongs to Tipu's line. All of Tipu's 12 sons and their families had settled at Tollygunge, after being deported to Bengal. Buried in the sprawling slum that has come up at the cemetery are eight century-old tombs of the immediate descendants of Tipu, dilapidated, crumbling. There are no inscriptions anywhere.
The cemetery is approachable through a narrow lane that leads to Saheb Bagan ... With about 10,000 people, Saheb Bagan (is like) any other slum of the city ...
In 1974, almost a century and two decades after the British allotted 12 bighas to the family as a burial ground and a panel called the Mysore Family Fateha Fund was formed to manage the cemetery, a family member established a parallel burial committee. Later, the parallel panel was declared illegal.
Yet, the parallel committee began selling land to outsiders right off and in 1974 people had begun to settle in. Today the area houses a huge colony ... Hussain ... says " ... I want the Government to declare the place as one of historical importance. That will be a real tribute to the memory of Tipu Sultan in the two hundredth year of the fall of Seringapatam."
