Socio-Economic Survey of Ayodhya Muslims Irfan Ullah in The Radiance, 23-29 Nov., 97
The twin cities of Ayodhya and Faizabad are situated on the right bank of the river Chapra. It is 127 kms, east of Lucknow, the capital of Uttar Pradesh. Ayodhya got world fame after the happening of 6th December 1992, the black day when the centuries old Babari Masjid was demolished in the broad daylight by the frenzy mob of Sangh Parivar, resulting in large scale destruction of property and killing of innocent people in various other cities of the country.
Ayodhya Muslims suffered a great loss but the Ummah (community) helped them to re-establish there. All kinds of help in the form of money and material was provided for them and their immediate problems were solved. But this did not change their educational and economic backwardness. Neither the residents of Ayodhya nor any welfare organisation prepared action plan for the upliftment of the people.
The Darsgah-e-Islam Society, Faizabad conducted a socio-economic survey of Muslims in Ayodhya ... Major highlights of the survey are as below :-
1. The population of Muslims is about 1793 consisting of 540 men, 405 women and 848 children. About 280 families are residing in Ayodhya.
2. 48.5% (are) illiterate, 3.8% graduate, 2.2% XIIth, 5.5% Xth passed, 5.8% VIIIth passed and 0.2%, Vith passed.
3.Dropouts of XII, X, VIII, VI are 49. They left studies and engaged themselves in small trades of low income.
4. 208 children in the age group 5-11 are not attending school. Most of them came from families with low income and poverty
5. 68 persons are not on electoral rolls.
6. About 70% (of the) families are (living) below poverty line (income less than Rs. 22,000/- per annum) ... A large number of persons are engaged in tailoring, mechanical work, labour, masonry, butchery, etc.
There is no (organised) scheme for their betterment and upliftment ... Some persons are still ... collecting money in the name of Ayodhya ...
... There are 35 mosques 4 madarsas, 6 Imambaras and 24 graveyard. In 8 Mohallas, not inhabited by Muslims 12 Mosques and 13 graveyards exist ...
