The question of a Ram temple at Ayodhya was solved when the structure built by Babar after destroying the Shri Ram temple was removed and a makeshift temple came up on the original site. Who renovates it or reconstructs it is not a major issue now. It will become an issue if any attempt is made to remove the temple from its original site once again. But the issues pertaining to the temple of nativity of Shri Krishna at Mathura and Shri Vishwanath at Kashi are very much alive. Any nationalist government worth its name will have to tackle this issue sooner or later. Opposition to their restoration to Hindus and their reconstruction is basically communal and against the spirit of secularism. It is time the political elite, particularly the leftist intellectuals and writers, as also nationalist Muslims rethink about ... the Hindutva agenda. (Source: The Hindustan Times, 3 December, 1999)
