'His Eminence Shri Jayendra Saraswati, Shankaracharya of Kanchi Peetam is reported to have stated that "For all practical purposes, the subject had been closed after the demolition of the mosque at Ayodhya. Nevertheless, whether or not there should be a temple in its place should be decided only by the followers of both religions.":
The BMMCC is convinced that the case is far from being closed, as the demolition on December 1992 has not made any difference either in religion or in law, to the existence of the Masjid on the site. In fact, the title suit is being heard on instruction of the Supreme Court by the Special Bench of the Allahabad High Court, while the disputed site and the lands attached thereto are presently in the custody of the Central Government and only after the title is decided, the Supreme Court shall allocate the disputed land, including the site of Babari Masjid for any construction.
An unlawful act like the demolition, in total violation of the dignity of the State, the Judiciary and the Legislature, cannot be final by any standards. In Islam the Masjid is the consecrated site which cannot be changed and not the structure, which can be re-built.
The demolition of the Babari Masjid not only violates the Constitution but goes against the very ethos of Hinduism. That is why, its destruction pained millions of Hindus all over the country.
The BMMCC recalls that the Muslims have always been prepared to accommodate their Hindu brethren by giving their consent to the construction of a Ram Mandir, as a gesture of respect for the Hindu sentiments, west to the site of the Babari Masjid on a part of the disputed land. In fact, the Convener himself had proposed this to the late Pramacharya of Kanchi Peetam Shri Chandra Sekhar Saraswati.
The BMMCC appreciates the suggestion of the Shankaracharya to the VHP not to press for the immediate construction of a mandir on the site of the Babari Masjid but requests him not to raise false expectation for the construction of mandir in anticipation of the final judicial verdict".

A Letter on Shankaracharya's Stand Sri Jayendra Saraswati says in his interview (November 8) that the Ayodhya problem is over. "The Lord has reclaimed his birthplace. There is no more any issue". This is exactly what the BJP extremists have been saying all these years. It is unfortunate that His Holiness has taken the same stance .. (Source: Mira Pande inThe Times of India, 1 December, 1997) |
