Who is right? Atal Behari Vajpayee or K.N. Govindacharya supported by Kalraj Mishra, a BJP Minister in UP? The Prime Minister goes out of his way to stress that Ram temple is not on the BJP Alliance agenda ... Similarly a uniform civil code and Article 370 are not within the scope of NDA agenda and hence are not campaign issues. Govindacharya who never shuns a controversy has been quick in contradicting Vajpayee. He has said that the "BJP is committed to these three contentious issues". If BJP has eschewed these debatable issues, why is it that the Sangh Parivar is keen to bring them up very time the Prime Minister tries to find a common denominator among the alliance partners? BJP today is part of the National Democratic Alliance of a number of parties with a common manifesto and action plan. While Vajpayee goes on talking like a statesman the Sangh Parivar is insistent that what was not included in the common agenda has not been confined to the back burner. Govindacharya had categorically stated that the party was neither breaking out of its commitment to those issues, nor was it apologetic about its stand. In the party's view it still had to traverse some distance before attaining the "steering position" in Indian politics. In the interregnum it would commit itself to the national agenda of governance ... This was no isolated incident.
