MUSLIM ORGANIZATIONS

All India Milli Council: Annual Conference's Political Resolution (Excerpts)  Lucknow, 31 August - 1 September, 1996

The General Body of the All India Milli Council

* Notes with satisfaction that the Indian electorate have rejected the communal and fascist forces and have thwarted their ambitions.

* Notes further, with appreciation, that all the political parties in parliament have honoured the mandate of their electorate and refused to join hands with the BJP despite all its efforts to win over their support during its 13-day rule.

Although the UF Government at the Centre has been in power for nearly three months ... It has not yet addressed itself to the issues concerning the Muslim community even though some of these had been brought to the notice of the UF Government by the Milli Council through its comprehensive note dated 1.6.1996 and subsequently through a delegation in its meeting with Prime Minister ... In view of the impending election to the state Assembly in UP calls upon the Muslims:

To maintain their attitude of strongly opposing the communal and fascist forces.

To cast their votes, which is not only a valuable right but also their duty.

To exercise their franchise with full sense of responsibility.

To vote unitedly rising above the ... considerations of religion, caste, class, baradari and schools of thought.

Muslim Community: A Minority with Majority Ethos

Muslims of India are not a mere minority, but the only all-India minority. They form the second largest Muslim community of all the countries in the world. To call them a 'minority' is to gloss over a complex problem. From the point of view of their big numbers, their social, cultural heritage and political impact, they are second biggest segment of Indian people, who exude the consciousness, the confidence and even the behaviour of majority.
