Ajay Singh on RSS Chief's Address to UP Administrators

.. It seems strange that bureaucrats have suddenly discovered the "virtues" of the RSS chief: Rajju Bhaiyya gave a long lecture to 60-odd civil servants on morality, ethics and uprightness. It is also a coincidence that all these bureaucrats were able to find Rajju Bhaiyya's lecture so refreshing only when Kalyan Singh happens to be the Chief Minister.

The meeting was organised as a 'get-together' for the alumnis of Allahabad University where Rajju Bhaiyya was once a teacher. But the underlying message was sinister ... It is curious how even those bureaucrats known for their forthrightness, chose to remain silent. It is common knowledge that those who organised the meeting have never really been the torch-bearers of morality in the UP bureaucracy. Instead, they have always been on the right side of all establishments.

Since the RSS chief commands immense power, especially after the BJP became a ruling party in Delhi and Lucknow, these bureaucrats are ready to bend backwards to reveal their unflinching loyalty to the cause espoused by the Sangh Parivar. In their mid-'40s and '50s, they are piepared to take lessons on morality and ethics from the ailing RSS chief. The event is symbolic of a diabolic mindset which the UP bureaucracy has acquired. In the past ten years, this mindset has revealed its fangs much to the discomfiture of common people. Civil servants are happy to play second-fiddle to crooked politicians ..

Quite clearly, a strong section of the bureaucracy of UP has reached a precipice from where it is impossible to arrest its decline. Now, they can virtuously survive by exhibiting their proximity to the RSS chief. If the political dispensation changes, they can effortlessly re-enact yet another (spectacle) so as to ensure their survival. Of course, with all the privileges and perks of power.                                                                       (Source: The Pioneer, 31 July, 1998)
