Introduction:

The Aligarh Muslim University is a Residential Academic Institution established in 1920. Sir Syed Ahmad Khan ... started a school as back as 1875 which later became a college and ultimately became a university in 1920.

This is premier Central University with several Faculties ... and draws students from all corners of the country as well as from foreign countries, especially Africa, West Asia and South East Asia. It is open to all persons ... of all races, religions, creeds or castes. The first graduate was Raja Mahindra Pratap Singh and post-graduate was Dr. Ishwari Prasad.

According to Section 2(1) of the AMU Act, 1920, the University means the "educational institution of their choice established by the Muslims of India, which originated as the Mohammedan Anglo Oriental College, Aligarh which was subsequently incorporated as the Aligarh Muslim University. The powers of the University, its aims and objectives, have been defined under Section 5 of the AMU Act (as amended upto 1981) which are:

(a) to promote oriental and Islamic studies and give instruction in Muslim theology and religion and to impart moral and physical training.

(b) to promote the study of the religions, civilisation and culture of India.

Students:

The University had 14,700 students on its rolls excluding 3599 school students. The enrollment was 3093 in Engg. and Technology, 180 in Management, 1280 in Medicine and 2155 in Science and 7992 in others.

Hostels:

There are 16 Halls of residences (including 3 Halls for girls and one non-resident students centre with a capacity of 8032 but actual allotment to 10,360 students.

Library Facilities:

Maulana Azad Library of the University works round the clock on all days ... (except) a few holidays of national and religious importance.

(The total) collection of books in the library as on 31.3.1997 comes to 9,00,379.

The library subscribed to 555 foreign ... and 638 Indian journals ... The library preserves 14,570 prestigious and invaluable manuscripts.

Games Facilities:

The University Games Committee ... runs 10 main clubs and 9 sub-clubs with 700 student participants ...

Welfare Activities:

The University has registered Staff Association/Union including the Teaching Staff Association.

Finances:

The University had on 31.3.1997 investments amounting to Rs.4302.74 lakhs in the form of Government securities/FDR's etc.

Development Activities:

The building department of the University was engaged in maintenance and repair of the University buildings and also in execution of various building projects sanctioned by the UGC. During the year 1996-97, the department has undertaken, the following major activities of Water supply and sewerage.

The building department has undertaken the construction of the following major building projects:

1) Construction of the Institute of Agriculture.

2) Construction of I.S.M. and Homeopathy building in A.K. Tibbiya College.

3) Construction/extension of Allama Iqbal Hall.

4) Construction of Jr. Doctors Hostel

5) Construction of Nurses Hostel

6) Construction of Library, Women's College.
