AIMMM: Statement of G.S. Shafi Moonis

The All India Muslim Majlis-e-Mushawarat ... expresses its sense of surprise and sadness over the Chief Minister ... Joshi's rejection of Srikrishna Commission Report ..

The Commission report reveals four specific points: one, the writings of Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray regarding the riots published in his newspaper, instigated riot-loving elements more and more. Second, the Shiv Sena as a party took part in the massacre. Third, the role of the police was in favour of the rioters. And, four, the ongoing differences between the then Chief Minister, Mr. Sudhakarrao Naik and the then Union Minister for Defence, Mr. Sharad Pawar, kept on weakening the law and order situation, giving the criminal elements free hand to continue riots in the target areas. But Chief  Minister ... outrightly rejected the report ... saying that it was pro-Muslim and anti-Hindu, and that it was his duty as Chief Minister to protect the Hindus.

It is a matter of great concern ... that a Chief Minister (takes) such a stand in sharp contrast to the Constitution and the law of the land ... just to protect (ruling) parties and their followers from the ... consequences of their own wrong doing ...

The AIMMM ... hopes that the Chief Minister would review his stand coolly and would not set such a precedent as may negate the possibility of setting up ...commissions to probe ... serious massacres ... in the future and ... those held responsible .. might not have to face the law ... The parties and individuals (indicted by the Commission must be) prosecuted ... The Government at the Centre led by the BJP ... should not support the stand taken by the Chief Minister ...

The AIMMM ... appeals to the political and social organisations as well as the general public to play their due roles in maintaining law and order, (maintaining) communal harmony and fulfilling the (demands) of equity and justice.
