Since the Ram Janambhoomi-Babari Masjid controversy came to the fore, communalism and communal violence has assumed unprecedented proportions and has pushed the country to the precipice of disintegration. Communal violence has been frequently breaking out in different parts of India on the flimsiest pretext and claiming hundreds of human lives. Communal violence has now been penetrating rural areas too and what is more shocking now even women and children are not spared. There also have been instances of entire families burnt alive or female children being stabbed. This total brutalisation bodes ill for our country which swears by peace and non-violence.
What is most worrisome for us as a nation is that some politicians, in order to grab votes, have openly and flagrantly used religion for political ends and communalised our political processes. The law enforcing and administrative machinery too, on the other hand, has been communalised. There have been innumerable instances in which the police has openly helped the frenzied mobs indulging in arson, pillage and murder during curfew hours. The PAC, the BMP etc. are ofcourse known for their anti-minority bias. If all this is allowed to go unchecked our very existence as a nation would be endangered. We have to hang our heads in shame that such brutalities are being committed, such religious fanaticism (is) openly promoted and the government looks on helplessly and takes no step to prevent such a blatant use of religion for political ends and participation of law enforcing machinery...
The Reformist Bohras have always stood by secular and democratic values and urge upon the Government as well as all political parties to... ensure safety and security of all citizens. We also appeal to all secular and peace loving forces to come forward and fight religious fanaticism, sectarianism and communal bigotry.
