Mahatma Gandhi once said "A nation's greatness is measured by how it treats its weakest members." Going by the Mahatma Gandhi's words, treatment and rights of minorities can easily be an important factor of a nation’s success or failure. To deny their legitimate rights, Muslims are always reminded about the status of minorities in Muslims countries. Many points out at that minorities do not get fair deal in Muslim-majority countries and Muslims when in minority demands more. Islam gives clear and precise instructions about their rights and treatment of minorities. Islamic Law protects the rights of non-Muslims living in an Islamic society. The Islamic state has to guarantee protection for their life, property, and the places of worship...

The necessity for forcefully propagating the idea of inclusive development and composite culture through interfaith dialogue between different religious communities is increasingly felt in India. This is because those spreading canard of lies, hate and stereotypes are having a field day in the country while those preaching peaceful coexistence and unity in diversity are getting marginalized.[...]

As the relentless waves of privatisation, liberalisation and globalisation overwhelm the Indian economy, scores of traditional caste-based occupations in which Muslim Dalits and OBCs were heavily represented, are being ruthlessly decimated, rendering millions of families destitute. In such a scenario, the need for affirmative action for Muslim Dalits and OBCs, as indeed for other such marginalised groups, becomes even more imperative. But this should not be restricted simply to jobs in a rapidly shrinking public sector.[...]

He is a simple man with a gentle smile, and donning characteristic Muslim appearance. Long white beard, a skull cap (topi) and very simple clothing is what describes much better about Feraque Ahmad, the District Magistrate of India’s Muslim dominated district Kishanganj. At the first sight hardly anyone will believe that the man can be an IAS (Indian Administrative Service) officer and encompasses a high (liberal) thinking.[...]

Mewat covers large parts of the Gurgaon and Faridabad districts in Haryana and Alwar and Bharatpur in Rajasthan. When I did fieldwork in Mewat two decades ago, she was the only Meo female to have earned a Bachelor’s degree. Today, there are some three hundred others like her—which, considering that the Meo female population is estimated at around 600,000, still does not amount to much.[...]

This year due to a coincidence of the lunar calendar, Eid-ul-Fitr and Durga Puja, two major religious festivals of India, were celebrated within a week of each other in late September. After twenty-two years, I was able to witness both in my birth city of Kolkata (Calcutta, India). One common thread between the Pujas and Eids is the propensity amongst the faithful to shop for new clothes and gifts with the same fervor and joy as Christmas shoppers in my adopted homeland of United States.

The Madrasa as an institution has always been an eye-sore for the Sangh Parivar. They see it as the defence line for Muslim identity and an obstacle to eventual assimilation of Muslims in the Hindu fold. Under the NDA government the madrasas particularly in border areas were looked upon as cradle for terrorists and shelter for militants. As a result many madrasas including Nadwatul Ulama were subjected to search.
